There is enormous power in doing your best to stay still during tough times; in patience and silence. It is the power of self-discipline. Self-control.
Tough times are identified as storms that can lead to massive mental chaos and disturbances that can cause mental disorders that are common among all human beings, like PTSD, emotional and mental traumas, extreme stress, anxiety, depression, and forms of mental and psychological distortions. One's self-image, self-perception, and self-knowledge can also be shaken.
A commonly held concept has always been "fighting" against anything that threatens your peace of mind. In other words, it is an automatic reactive defense act that attempts to protect the "stability" of the self from any threatening changes that are also unpredictable. When this "fighting" normally fails (because it is not the best nor the right choice in this case), the severeness of pain, vagueness, fearfulness, and anxiety keeps mounting. Subsequently and because of the constant resistance that keeps getting more violent, one loses control over everything - including one's own self. The automatic perception of the self in this case shifts to "rejection" or "abandonment" for its perceived inability to keep fighting and effectively make an achievement. In the long run, this can lead to the development of self-hate. Self-hate enhances the storm even more and turns it into something much more dramatic. It continues to escalate and attract incidences, feelings, and moods that are quite similar to them. One can end up in total confusion because of all these mental blockages and continue to be pulled downward.
The opposite scenario is staying still and being focused on what the moment truly is in itself - i.e.: trying to see it for what it truly is (in its real size - mentally and emotionally) and stopping the mind from rushing toward exaggerations and jumping into depressing conclusions.
The whole situation can be mentally likened to a battlefield where dust rises so high that it blocks near and distant eyesight. In this case, stillness and lack of resistance can help reduce the vagueness of the scene, give time for the dust to settle, and for you to see things much clearly and make better decisions.
