What does it mean to read effectively?
To read effectively means: to understand, grasp, and be able to connect ideas and come to satisfying conclusions with respect to any topic you choose to read in/about. In other words, to be able to benefit from what you read and get what you really want out of it.
In order for your reading to be effective in this sense, you need to take care of two things:
1. Choose your text carefully:
Make sure your text is what yo really want. Reading readers' notes about it will help you decide. Also make sure it is reliable, objective, clear and unbiased. Books by reputable writers, or those that are published by well respected "historical" publishers should be your first option.
So, make sure you know more about the quality of the text before spending your time on it.
2. Follow the methods of effective reading:
Remember that the quality of reading and the knowledge that you gain are not dependent on the quantity of what you put into your mind; it is rather dependent on the quality, and the skill.
The quality of your critical thinking which manifests in your ability to select the relevant or needed material rather than reading the entire thing.
When it comes to the skill, it has much to do with your ability to summarize, make notes, write your own impressions, questions and conclusions.
As far as academic reading (for academic writing) is concerned, it is of great significance to know more about the source you invest your time in to make sure it is reliable, and also to make sure that it goes in accordance with your aims. And always remember that your source is only "a source to benefit from", and not "a bible to follow". Make the best out of it, but always remember your own research work, and your own research questions.
Blessings to you all
